Understanding Blockchain Scalability Metrics
Transactions Per Second (TPS) measures how many transactions a blockchain processes each second and remains one of the most widely used performance metrics in Web3. Alongside Real-Time TPS, Chainspect also tracks Maximum TPS, representing the highest sustained throughput observed on the network, and Maximum Theoretical TPS, which estimates the protocol's upper performance limit under ideal conditions.
Scalability, however, extends beyond throughput alone. Block time determines how frequently new blocks are produced, while finality measures how long it takes before transactions become irreversible. A blockchain with high TPS but slow finality may still provide a worse user experience than a network with lower throughput but faster confirmation times.
